What to expect
Berlin in the summer smells divine at Plänterwald! Many medicinal and edible herbs grow in abundance in this 90 hectare urban forest along the spree river. The midsummer sun invites us to take refuge in the shaded canopy of giant oak and beech trees. Nettles can sting but can also be made into tea or pesto! Neon orange mushrooms decompose trees, but can also make tender delicious filets.
Join Hani, a local mushroom and medicinal /edible plant expert as we journey through Plänterwald on a summer afternoon and come home with a bounty of knowledge and excitement for all of the hidden beauty Berlin’s nature has to offer. Wildflowers and summer ephemerals, and wild salad greens will line our path as we take a 3km trip through the forest learning together.
We will learn about the plants growing at the path's edges, that have been used for centuries to treat and soothe illnesses and discomfort, and understand how to be respectful and aware of your impact when visiting the homes of our more than human friends. Don’t forget to bring a notebook and your imagination because we will stop to draw, reflect, and write once we reach a scenic point and share what new curiosities we have discovered.
We will finish the walk at the Spree`s edge overlooking the banks of the river, reflecting on the diversity and resilience in wildlife that has settled in the cracks of the stones of our city.
